How did some dog breeds come to have different coat varieties?
Like the Rough Collie and the Smooth Collie. Beauceron and Briard. Long haired, wirehaired, and smooth haired dachshund. I know that in the AKC the smooth and rough collie are judged by the same standards except the coat
Selective breeding.
Sometimes when we selectively breed for one trait, others are affected.
A great example of this is the Silver Fox experiment. Foxes are canines, but cannot mate with domestic dogs, so the experimenter chose them. He also chose them because their coats were valuable.
He bred for one trait only, tameness. He selected the foxes that would allow humans the closest, then bred them to the same.
In a few short generations, not only had he produced "tame" foxes, but he noted many other changed. He started seeing piebald patterns in the coats, floppy ears, curled tails, etc. All from breeding for one trait.
Sometimes, it is simply a genetic mutation that may have occured as well.
