I have a Labrador Retriever, but she doesn't have a broad head. Why?
She is a purebred Yellow Lab. I looked at the AKC page and it says Labs are supposed to have a broad head. Any help?
There are two main types of Labrardors in the US, and historically they have found different niches.
The "English" style as you see are the Show Dog niche. These dogs are short, boxy, and very powerful. Most have short hair with the broad head. They are bred for these characterisics, and many time they try to get the coloring as light as possible
The "American" style that you will also see, (I think this may be your style) is a taller, thinner look, iwth a longer snout and thinner head. These dogs are usually taller than their English cousins and their use is more for hunting, field trial work. These dogs are not bred for their appearance as much as for their field trial work. They can have longer hair and variations of color.
Both breeds are AKC. Unless you have a desire to show or hunt the dog, neither of these should mean too much to you, Anyone looking for a labrador is better off checking the health and reputation of the breeder and the parent dogs, as well as assuring the parents have been checked for hip displasia and other concerns.
