What is the difference between a Johnson & Scotty American Bulldog?
I live in a smallish house with a smallish back yard (fenced). I have a Jack Russell & a cat. My husband and I are trying to find a friend that can hang with the energy of our JR but not double the trouble... Is this a good breed? Also, we are planning on having children soon.... if this is not a good breed for us, any suggestions? If it is... know of any great breeders in FL?
The difference between the Johnson & Scott bulldogs is mostly appearance. They are the same breed; one is more "streamlined" (think of the dog "Chance" in the movie Homeward Bound) and one is more stocky and "bulldoggy".
They are a very active breed that needs a lot of space and/or a "job" to do. Folks in rural areas like to use them for hog hunting, as they are tough and athletic and well suited for this activity. Generally speaking, they're not an ideal dog for a suburban setting & small backyard. They also tend not to do well with cats & small animals, unless socialized with them.
You'd run a good chance of "doubling the trouble" with this breed....also, if you end up expecting children while the dog is still in the puppy/teenage stages you may end up with too much on your hands....the Am. Bulldog requires a good deal of consistent training, early on.
Personally, I'd suggest a breed closer in size with somewhat of a lower energy level than the Jack Russel. Adopting a middle-aged adult dog might also be a good idea....you do without that whole puppy-chewing-housebreaking stuff. Lots of dogs in rescue are already trained & come with no behavior issues. Plus, you know what "personality type" you're getting.
If you really like the looks of the American Bulldog, the Boxer is a bit smaller and while they have plenty of energy, it's the kind of energy that can be satisfied with a good daily walk or two, and lots of playtime with his JRT friend. Plus, they "mellow out" considerably when they reach 2-3 years of age. Again, there are tons of Boxers in Rescue....Google Florida Boxer Rescue; I used to volunteer for them.
