American Kennel Club Registration Q&A
registering purebred dogs in USA?
We all know that the AKC is the biggest game in town when it comes to purebred dogs. And I think most people are with it enough to realize that most of the other registries out there are scams (Continental KC, American Canine Association, America's Pet Registry Inc., American Purebred Registry, etc).
But the AKC is not the only game in town when it comes to reputable registries of purebred dogs.
What about the United Kennel Club (UKC)? Founded a mere 14 years after the AKC it is the second oldest kennel club in the United States. They have very similarly stringent registration requirements to register a dog for conformation and they offer more (and in many people's opinion more difficult) performance events.
So what are people's views on the UKC? Why are they "less reputable" than the AKC? Or, why are they every bit as reputable?
I love UKC. I showed my mixbreed in obedience and agility thru them. We competed on an equal playing field with purebred dogs. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. Personally, i believe their obedience routine is harder than AKC, particularly the Utility exercises.
I also show my dachshund in UKC agility, obedience & breed. He's a dual AKC/UKC Ch. What I liked about showing in UKC breed, is the ring is bigger, giving you room to move and it seemed that the judges we've showed under, really knew the breed standard and really went over our dogs.
UKC is certainly not "less reputable" than AKC. I believe the UKC is just overlooked. Also, I would say they are more of an performance registry. I love their Total Dog program. It encourages those who show in conformation to also compete in their other performance events.

American Kennel Club Registration Q&A
What do you think about the AKC?
The American Kennel Club (AKC) registered more than 413,000 dogs in 2006, some of whom will join the millions of animals are abandoned in shelters animals each year. The purpose of the AKC is to study, exhibit, promote and maintain the breeds of dogs, no matter the cost to the dogs or society. Stating firmly that dogs are the property, the organization actively and aggressively fighting mandatory sterilization of pets programs, funding for lobbying efforts with the millions dollars received from breeders who pay AKC registration fees. We recommend raising the issues that apparently have nothing to do with the health of dogs and sometimes negatively affect them. Pugs, for example, notoriously have trouble breathing because of its short muzzle. A breeder admits that the highly coveted pug face stems from a recessive gene ". If left to their fate, or do not play carefully, do not keep their flat faces," What do you think?
I do not like the idea that the AKC is "only one record." Has more influence than that. You can do better, but chooses not to. The AKC prohibits the performance tests as a requirement to win a championship. Other registries allow clubs to meet the playback restrictions. For example. German Shepherd Club of Germany, requires hip and elbow-ray X, as well as other tests before a dog can be raised and registration cooperates with them in this effort. The AKC also will not allow the restriction of the puppy records mill or pet store or allow clubs to this provision on their individual races. They also set their own minimum and maximum age requirements Play for registration. The CKCSC includes a ban on puppymill records and had different reproductive ages set out in its code of ethics and attempted to negotiate these when courted by the AKC. The AKC refused to accept the limitations clubs to register for the Cavaliers. The issue split the club and the gene pool. The AKC is complicit in the trade puppymill and every other record is. That is sad. As a fan of history and race as the Farm Collie and Husky Alaska, who have never been "Pure bred" not at all understand anything about the philosophy of "virgins" play. I do not like his class and therefore have no use for records that are proposed to promote the breed pure breeds that were established long before the AKC occurred. The AKC has ruined most of the working class breeds has been done on their feet with their ideas for improvement towards a type that is defined primarily by phenotype. I mean even the "progressive" changes in rules and race "improvement." If people like the AKC definition of "pure race", either, but should not be forced on the rest of us. Must Stay exclusively as if it were meant to be - not for those who do not share the values. The fantasy does not have a monopoly on the "right" or even "pure."
