American Kennel Club Website Q&A
is the AKC FSS a real title?
for a reputable breeder? this website which I think is a puppymill says their pups are either titled with UKC (united kennel club) or AKC FSS (American Kennel Club Foundation Stock Service) I'd never heard the AKC be followed with that before so wanted to check, Also as I understand the UKC title is meaningless too?
the person is selling 6 week old "discount puppies" through a facebook page..and will fly them to the buyer at an extra fee..so I'm pretty positive it's a puppymill (a ton of different litters all about 6 weeks) but I wanted to report it to the AKC
a lot of different breeds. but even ones I know are recognized by the AKC say AKC FSS (like the jack russell terrier)
In this case, a UKC title is just fine. The AKC doesn't allow an FSS breed to show in conformation classes, so the UKC is a perfectly viable option. Or, like in APBT's where the breed isn't even UKC registerable, UKC titles are all you have.
As others said before me, FSS is just the 'group' that the breed is placed until all the breed club stuff is figured out, a breed standard is agreed upon, and all the AKC hoops are jumped through.
Jack Russell Terriers are *not* given full AKC status. Parson Russell Terriers are. A number of years back, the two breeds split; the PRT's were given full status and the "Russell Terrier" is still in FSS. http://www.akc.org/breeds/fss_breeds.cfm
Selling 6 week old puppies, having 'a ton' of litters, and giving "discounts" certainly stinks of puppy mill or BYB. The fee for shipping is not a problem at all and neither is a UKC conformation title, if that's what it is. And actually, the discount could actually go either way. I know a perfectly responsible Rhodesian Ridgeback breeder that sells her ridgeless pups for $400.
The AKC doesn't regulate puppy mills or prohibit them. As long as all their registration and husbandry requirements are met the, the AKC doesn't give a rat's patootie. There are plenty of puppy mills out there with AKC dogs - as long as the AKC is getting their registration fees, they don't care. One of the major reasons I respect the AKC so little. They are one of the only major registries to be so behind on the times.
As long as the breeder is dotting her i's and crossing her t's, there is nothing the AKC will do. HOWEVER, if they are violating an AKC rule, they can be suspended. Like if they use a sire that's been bred over 7 times and haven't done a DNA registry on him.
