Are Dobermans or Blue Heelers good dogs?
My dad was thinking about getting a Doberman or a Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) are any of them good with kids ages 10+? will any go in the water? what are some things i should know
Tricky. Traditionally, the Doberman is a guardian dog, extremely intelligent and decently sized. I have seen some wonderful dobermans. The Australian Cattle Dog is a working dog and the popular name Blue Heeler comes from their habit of biting the heels of cattle when herding them. The Cattle Dog has boundless energy and requires more exercise than a doberman.
If properly trained, either breed ought to be fine with children, however this statement comes with a big qualifier. The children must be taught how to treat the dog! Both these breeds can be dangerous if not trained properly. It is not enough that your dad can handle the dog, the children must rank above the dog, too, otherwise they are in danger.
I don't know if your dad is willing to consider other breeds, but I'll list a few anyway, that I know are really wonderful as family pets. These include border collies and kelpies (working dogs), golden retrievers and any other bird dog (as retrievers are not biters, they have 'soft' mouths, bred for bringing prey back without chewing it), as well as some smaller breeds that can be enormous fun - the shih tzu, the pug, kavalier king charles spaniel.
