My dog hates strangers, will professional training make him like them or at least tolerate them?
My dog hates strangers. He's 2 years old and an australian shepherd. He's fine with dogs. Should I take him to obedience training classes with other people and dogs or what? Should I train him myself? And how?
He really does dislike strangers. He barks, growls and jumps at them if they ever get close to our house. He won't stop barking until he can't hear them!
You cannot train a dog to "like" something...you absolutely can train him to tolerate it. Aussies are smart and eager to please. Obedience classes will teach him to work around distractions of people and other dogs, how to ignore them and focus on you. With that ignoring tactic, he will become somewhat more tolerant of distractions around him. Once his is obedience trained, you can take it a step further and work specifically on desensitizing to or just ignoring strangers.
My trainer works with a dog for a fee for 5 hours privately. You then have the option of going to free group classes for the life of the dog. I have been attending for a year...just for fun and reinforcement. I had been having some problems with the way my dog would greet other dogs. After his training, I can attend a class of up to 25 people and dogs and my dog will focus only on his job. If for some reason he reacts to anything, I can give him the leave it, watch me or away command, and he will listen. Just takes a lot of time and homework.
I would allow your dog to alert you, but stop him after that. Like a 2 bark rule. That is actually what I do in my home...let him alert me, but not ramp it up.
We do have a few Aussies in our group...they are incredibly well focused on their owners.
Definitely try training...it will be great for both of you! Good luck.
