Need help training my Australian Shepherd to take the Dumbell!?
My young Aussie is training in obedience. We already have our CD and all of the other CDX exercises down... but he won't retrieve the dumbell! I have tried EVERYTHING that I can think of! Force, positive reinforcement and clicker! I have trained several other dogs to take the dumbell, but I have never had this kind of trouble! I am using a wooden dumbell with painted ends. It is the proper size. PLEASE HELP!
I have used ear pinch, treats, "prey drive" and the clicker. I have been training dogs for 10 years. Please answer only if you have a possible solution. Thanks
I have an Aussie too and THE BEST way I have found to teach the dumbbell is this:
1. Put a leash on him/her and step on the end so that he/she has to stay close to you.
2. Put the dumbbell in his/her mouth.
3. Put your hand under his/her mouth and when he/she opens her mouth, firmly but, gently knock his.her mouth shut. **You are not pushing the dog's mouth shut or hitting the dog. It is very fine line.**
Then every time the dog starts to let go of the dumbbell you bonk it's chin so it can't drop it and say "No, hold it!"
If you can get to the point of counting to four (yes, four) then release the dog and start again. Do this six times a day, 3 in the, morning and three at night before bed! Trainers swear by this method though it does not have a name..... Hmmm.....
I call it "Correct when open".
