Beagle Breeders Canada Q&A

5 week GSD/Rotwieler/Beagle/Spaniel Puppy!?

Instead of telling me that the puppy needs to be with their litter mates and mother till 6-8 weeks can you please answer the questions below, as I got that part covered. The breeder is my neighbour and I only take him to my home to play and all. I will be getting him soon.

1. Dog food: I am in canada, is purina puppy chow good for this pup. How do I know which food is the best and not by looking at the label?

2. What type of toys should I get him? Squeeky, hard, soft?

3. When should I get him on a leash and train him to leash and all that

4. can they be taken outside and be played with in the grass and all that? or are they too small at 5-8 weeks?
5. What type of training treats should I get him? the paste type or the cookie type? Can u recommend me the ones that they like the MOST

hmmm you know they cant go home till 8 weeks then you know that training shouldnt really start till then too.

1. Purina is a bad choice for dog food. I would go to a pet store that sells holistic dog foods, or research and invest in a Raw Diet recipe rather than bagged dog food.
2. Please read what is best for dog toys. The conventional toys of rubber and squeakies are generally considered bad idea since the tear and rip, the puppy can ingest the pieces and the squeakers, Hard balls like Kongs, and large, uncooked, natural bones are good toys. I DO play with tennis balls with my dogs but I watch the dogs with them and take them away when the play is over. I use professional dog Frisbee for them too. NOT the regular old plastic ones you get at trade shows and such.
3. I would not start leash training till he is actually with you, and around 8 weeks. This has to be done, gentle with lots of love and praise or run the risk of him getting scared and belligerent with it. Place a collar on him temporarily during the day so he's used to it and them introduce the leash very slowly, let him run the bounds of the leash, dont ever PULL him to get him going.
4. They can go outside now, if they want. Nothing wrong with that. They have to be supervised though that they dont get into things, and be sure the yard is fertilizer and pesticide free.
5. Training treat, if your pup likes the biscuits these are fine, the hard ones are good for teeth. The paste is hard to handle when training. You can get freeze dried liver and chicken, dogs love that one. I like to cook white meat chicken and then dry and cool it and use that too.
