becoming a dog breeder?
how do i become a successful dog breeder? i would love to breed only two breeds, labradors and beagles, to better the breed (if that's possible. they're so great already!). i would also enjoy selling the puppies, if that's a good thing to do. but, i have a few questions..
1. should i sell the puppies?
2. do you have any sites i should read?
3. how do you 'better' a breed?
4. how do i build a 'kennel' outside with heat?

thankyou all for the answers you've given me already. whenever i am able to move out and live on my own, i will be sure to get a house big enough for a litter of puppies to keep inside. i also have a friend that breeds yorkies, so she is a good mentor. i also have a neighbor who breeds too.
also, i've already read the entire learntobreed.com site, just to note. ツ
It all comes down to the type of breeder you want to be. A responsible one that's actually inmproving the breed or a backyard breeder/puppy mill who is breeding because it's fun and you want to sell puppies or make money.
1. Unless you plan on keeping them all, then yes, you sell the ones who will not add to your program.

You also need to look at http://www.dogsindanger.com and http://www.petfinder.com to get a true grasp on the overpopulation/overbreeding problem. Breeding is fine, when done right.
3. By spending years and years working with the breeds you are interested in and learning the ins and outs. This will also teach you to recognize good & bag traits in dogs. Selective breeding attempts to strengthen the positive and remove the negative.
4. Speak with other breeders. They can give you resources to contact for more info.
Added: You have a "friend" that breed Yorkies? Does she show them or compete them? Does all the proper OFA, CERF, and genetic testing? If not, she the exact opposite of a mentor. She's a backyard breeder. If the breeder doesnt compete their dogs, then they are a BYB or puppy mill. No way around it 99.99999% of the time.
