Become A Dog Breeder Q&A

my husband wants to become a dog breeder....?

he wants to try and make it as his career and stuff but he doesn't understand that its not gonna work, how can i explain to him that it is not a career and i think its pointless, especially when you have a family to worry about??? how can i talk him out of it?? thats all he talks about it and it is starting to get annoying....
im not trying to put his dreams down, i just think that we are not ready as we have two young babies and one more on the way, i just think we have more important expenses right now...

This is something that I have thought about. I am buying a rare breed dog right now for $1,500 (including shipping). The total litter is 7 puppies which is rather small for this breed but at $1,500 for pet quality and up to $2000 for show quality, there is money to be made. For 7 pet quality puppies thats $10,500 dollars. Now don't let the money fool you. I am buying from a reputable breeder who has around 8 dogs. So to get started you are looking at atleast $15,000 to $20,000 in just good quality dogs. Now you have to train the dogs you get so that takes time and energy. You need a place to put the dogs so now you need good kennels. You should breed a female only once a year. If you have 4 females, you could get up to 4 litters per year and make $40,000. From that, minus about 2 grand per litter for shots, deworming, dew claws and other vet bills. Now you are down to $32000 Next is good quality dog food for your dogs. For large dogs, that could be a $1,500 a year. A 40 lb bag of Blackwoods dog food is around $55. Now you are down to $30,500, minus the $20,000 on dogs you needed to buy and you are down to $10,500. Don't forget to subtract the cost of the kennels. Probably around $2,000 for good kennels. So if you have around $25,00 to $30,000 to put into it to start with, you might make around $10,000 the first year if you are successfull. But what if you are not? Then what? You just spent $25000 on a business that didn't work. Now you are stuck with alot of dog that cost money just to keep. Like I said to start with, I have thought about breeding too. My plan is to do it over a period of around 5 to 7 years so that I wont have to abandon my family and spend a ton of money at one time for a business that isn't guaranteed to be successfull. I would say do it bit by bit and don't rush into it. And whatever you do, don't start a puppymill.

Become A Dog Breeder Q&A

Becoming a dog breeder?

I want to breed German Shepherd and want to become someday a reputable breeder. I want to improve the breed and share this wonderful dog with others. What is the process to become one and how much it cost. All the details I can provide would be appreciated. No, I do not want to be a BYB ... I know I have to get a license, but how does that usually cost, and please be detailed in the whole process, please. I am very interested in this, and want to know as much as possible.

Reputable Breeding is not cheap, I can tell you that much. The exhibition, education, genetic testing and tons of other stuff that goes to the dogs and breeding and then when the puppies can make a profit, but not a big one. What kind of wants to breed German shepherds? Want to be active in the shows? If your dog show you are interested, learn more about the sample-to attend some, etc. Or a working German Shepherd? Schutzhund? join this club: http://www.gsdca.org/gsdca_joomla/index.php This is the national breed club and most reputable breeders join their club of the breed. After deciding what you want to show, work, Schutzhund then find a breeder who has titled dogs in whatever you chose. Learn more about it, you'll find people to help you out, a sort of mentor. If your sample, you will need show devoted to the show so some may have to sign cooperation with them to ensure that the dog shows, etc. The German club pastor of work: Genetics Most of them http://www.gsdca-wda.org/ tests can not be done before 2 years. I suggest visiting local dog shows, joining a local dog club that has events like, showing agility, etc. to learn the ropes. Talk with breeders, judges, etc. and learn about the breed. It might take a while to start, there is much to learn to do. I think it's safe to say that if your shape or schutzhund dog will have a basic training, in addition, I would suggest the AKC Good Citizenship program that can help later in other events. http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/program.cfm get started on obedience: http://www.akc.org/events/obedience/getting_started.cfm start at the rally: agility http://www.akc.org/events/rally/getting_started.cfm: http://. akc.org / pdfs / events / agility / Agility_Brochure.pdf Conformation: Schutzhund http://www.akc.org/events/conformation/beginners.cfm http://germanshepherddog.com/members/what_is_schutzhund.pdf
