Agility with Bernese Mountain Dog?
In talking to my breeder I learned that Berner can get a lot of exercise and enjoyment out of agility and it's something I would like to get into with my pup but I am not sure how. I have never done agility before so any info people have would be awesome!
I have read that Berner pups should not be heavily exercised for the first year or so because it can put damage skelatal development. What can I do to get a pup started with agility that won't be too strenuous or should I wait until he's a bit older?
I have and breed Bernese.. I've started training one of my 15 mos old pups for agility (I've titled Samoyeds in agility but haven't attempted it yet with the Berners).
My approach-
puppy kindergarten
obedience classes
puppy agility classes (contact obstacles only) You can teach your dog a lot of commands, working away from you, turning, going out, cross behinds etc... without EVER jumping the dog. We're doing private lessons so we don't have to deal with jumping.
*I* have made the decision not to jump my Bernese until after the age of two and after she's had both her hips and her elbows OFA'd. Since I will also be showing her in conformation- I do not want to risk injury or structural damage to her due to jumping her too young.

We have been working as overlanding adventure tour guides in South America for the past few years and are heading back to the states shortly. We really want to start a family and have been extremely excited to add a fun loving, loyal companion such as the Bernese Mountain puppy. We have been researching them for the past year and feel he or she would be a perfect addition to the family we want to grow.
We are returning to the states between March and june and would love the opportunity to pick up an available liter.
Please let us know if this is possible.
