Bernese Mountain Dog Breeders Wisconsin Q&A
Bernese Mountain Dogs........?
Hey,
I'm thinking about getting a Bernese Mountain dog. Can somebody tell me where I can find a good breeder that's not super expensive in Wisconsin or Minnesota? Do they make good pets? How much does the average bmd cost? What can you tell me about them?
Thanks!
There are a lot of good breeders in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Here's a club in the Twin Cities:

And one in Wisconsin:

Realize.. HIGH quality Bernese (ones with parents with all their health tests) are expensive- usually $1500-$2000 but this really is a case where you get what you pay for. You also may need to get on a waiting list for several breeders before you get a puppy. (One of the pups from my last litter was sold to someone who had been on another breeder's list for 2 years!!).
They are excellent pets, but not terribly long-lived. Good breeders are working on this and are taking into account the average age of death (AOD) on certain bloodlines when choosing studs.
They require training and heavy socialization when young as they were developed primarily is farm/cart dogs and can be standoffish or shy if not properly socialized.
They make lousy outdoor dogs as they bark, chew and dig... and they are heat intolerant.
I've been a Samoyed person my whole life... now, I'll never be without a Bernese.
