What's the best breed of dog for children?
Find a dog that matches your children's personalities. If they are high energy and love playing ball, any kind of retriever or hunting breed will do well. Just remember retrievers (including labs and spaniels) have a TON of energy and need a lot of attention. But you will get attention and love 10fold from the dog for your efforts. I grew up with springer spaniels and they were fantastic.
I agree with the person who mentioned Pembroke Welsh Corgi. If you don't know if the family will have the time to spend DAILY curbing the enthusiasm of the dog, then a corgi is a good choice for not requiring so much, yet still having a fantastic personality.
If you aren't an "exercise" type of family, get a dog in the non-sporting group...or a mutt. If you do exercise a lot and can share that time with your dog, a sporting breed will be fun for you and your kids.
