What is the best small dog breed for not being aggressive or tempermental?
Most small dogs will be very needy and can be very dramatic. I can't think of a single toy breed that isn't.
Aggression can be avoided with proper socialization and proper training. It can also come from proper breeding and early puppyhood.
Chis, Yorkies, Lhasas, Shih Tzus, Poms, Min Pins, and several others are known to have small dog syndrome - where they feel easily threated and intimidated, so they bark and nip to make up for it. Anything with "terrier" in the name may have issues with aggression or temperament, but the extent can really depend on the dog and the upbringing.
Italian Greyhounds are less aggressive, but they require A LOT of care and attention. More so than any other toy breed. They will not tolerate being left for longer than 3-4 hours at a time and need to be on you constantly. They are also incredibly fragile and can be skittish.
If you are concerned about these issues, visit a shelter and find an older dog (8 months and up) who meets your needs. The best part is, they'll be vetted, fixed, and possibly potty trained at that age! http://www.petfinder.com

What's the best small dog breed for family pet?
I'm looking into getting a small addition to our family, we lost our Dobe November last past, and although I would not have changed the world and loved to bits that had a huge aversion to other dogs, despite our best efforts and therefore early socialization, which often made life difficult for us. We were thinking of something smaller, maybe a Jack Russell and Patterdale, however I have heard that particularly do not have a pet Patterdale ideal, since they need to work. Can anyone recommend an ideal race would be very easy to go with short hair?
yorkshire terrier mine is turbot.
