I have two short haired dogs, a beagle and a great dane/black lab mix. Whats a good brush for when they shed?

I have tried a couple different ones, angled wire brush, plastic bristles, just a regular grooming brush. Nothing works AT ALL! Have noticed that my Dane/Lab is starting to shed again. Would love some help

There are a couple of things you can try, like others suggested, a metal shedding blade that has small teeth on one side and larger teeth on the other side. When I use one on Lab type coats, I sweep down, with the lay of the fur, then at the end I flick the blade in a small arc away from the dog. You would want to do this outside for easy clean up. The motion at the end, flicking away will flip a lot of dead hairs away. Then after the shedding blade, finish with a soft bristle brush. Don't use the shedding blade too hard or too long as you can irritate the skin and cause rashing.

Another good way to combat the shedding is to get the dogs to a professional groomer every two weeks for a good scrubbing bath and ask for them to be hand dried with a force dryer. Some groomers only cage dry short-coated dogs so you have to ask in advance if they have a force dryer and if it will cost more for hand drying. Most mobile groomers only force dry dogs since it is one on one and the quicker the dry, the better the schedule will run. Again, you need to ask if they offer this. Mobile grooming is the most expensive since it is one on one service so you need to do a price check as well.

At this time of year, with the daylight hours reducing, dogs that do shed are losing summer coat, getting ready for the winter coat to set in. You should be able to get by OK with about 3 groomings about 2 weeks apart. Then you should go on some type of grooming schedule for at least once every 3 months until Spring shed when you will need a few more grooms close together again.

DO NOT USE a metal slicker brush on short coated dogs! You can cause skin damage and rashing which will be VERY uncomfortable for the dogs and will cause scratching and maybe even more skin damage. Slicker brusher are intended for long and medium coated dogs ONLY!
