Blue Heeler Dog Training Q&A
How can I train my dog to stop whining alot?
We have a Blue Heeler mix that is about 6 years old. He is a good dog and mostly stays out of trouble. However, whenever he wants to go somewhere that he can't go (like outside because one of us is out there), he whines with a high pitch squeak over and over. Sometimes he just can't go where he wants to go for various reasons. What is the proper training method to fix this? (yes, we let him outside when he needs to use the "facilities")
Unfortunatly hounds and gun dogs are whinners. I work at a humane society and I hear high pitch whinning constantly from those breeds. I also have a basset hound and some times it drives me crazy with it's whinning. Those breeds were bread to be vocal so hunters can keep track of them. It comes very natural to them and it's a difficult problem to fix. If you can't live with it I think the best advice I can give you would be to consult a pro. They can give you a program to fit your dogs need or tell you if its a lost cause. A submissive dog would not bennifit from having his muzzle grabed or telling him to "shut up" when he is doing a behavior that has been bred into him.
p.s. I always say more exercise solves most dog issues but my hound get's at least an 1 1/2 of park time plus the walk there and back, a day, and it has no effect on his whining.

Blue Heeler Dog Training Q&A
Leash training a herding dog?
I just adopted a dog from cattle in Australia (Blue Heeler) last weekend. She is adorable, funny, and very smart. She is learning commands very quickly and is very well behaved. The only thing I'm having many problems with the belt is training. She definitely has the herding instinct, and she's always behind the people. With a strap that will walk very close to my feet and zig zag in front of me, rubbing my legs. It's hard not to trip over it. I've been trying make sure to keep your belt tight to my hand and treat you very well if she walks by my side. I was wondering what is the best way to help get more This herd instinct and travel well? Finally I want to have to be a running mate.
Yes, it can be very annoying. I have had a Border Collie chasing cars, etc. We are working on the issue. But back to you. Reward me in position. When she is on your side, strong, exciting, praise and candy giant. Make short sessions. Perhaps a walk in the driveway, while his reward for his side will be enough for the idea in his head. She will learn that position is valuable. Then start increasing the duration of your walks. It will take patience, yes, but it will be worth at the end. In addition to being stepping into the outbreak, while the performance is still forming. Good luck and feel free to PM me.
