Blue Heeler Trainers Q&A

crating blue heeler pups?

we have 2 blue heeler pups (brother & sister) they are 7 weeks old, we just got them. We want to crate them at night for sleeping. Should they be crated seperate or together? The breeder told us together a trainer told us seperate. What should we do to make life good for them and for us?

My heeler sleeps by himself when we got him he was 16 weeks old and the breeder separated him from his brother she was going to keep the two of them but decided to cut back on the amount of dogs she has. So we got him and brought him home and made him still sleep by himself. If you tend to crate dogs together they tend to want to play when they need to be sleeping or be loud when they need to be quiet. We had to Jack Russell's that we did this with same age etc. We got 2 crates put them side by side so they could see each other in the beginning and later placed a sheet over them so they could not so there would be no separation issues later down the road. The female would have killed the male I believe had we crated them together because she was very territorial. I also suggest in the beginning to give them each a nylon bone or such while in there to help entertain them some. As well if you want to help keep them from doing their business in there remember not to give them any food or water in their crates and to take them out before you crate them as well as try and only feed them when they are out and take them out after they eat about 30 minutes or so... Good luck and I love those Australian Cattle Dogs I would not trade mine fore nothing. Are yours AKC registered???
