Boston Bulldog Breeders Q&A

The Bateson report and breeds needing C-sections.?

The Bateson enquiry ( http://dogbreedinginquiry.com/ ) Stated that 86.1% of bulldogs and 92.3% of Boston Terriers have to be delivered surgically.
In light of this do you think breeders of dogs who nearly always need surgery to deliver puppies should be working towards only breeding from bitc hes/dogs that where themselves birthed naturally? Or do you think there is too much heel dragging and protest about the breeds standard?
Have these dogs become gross parodies of their type, even from as little as 40 or 50 years ago?
EDIT: @ Annie, we are not talking about an emmergancy c-section, of course you should be able to have one if you have a b*tch in distress, we are talking about the breeds in which it is a given that they will almost certainly HAVE to have a section. And we are talking puppies not children. People don't breed children for money.

The Swedish Kennel Klubb considers it a major fault that b*tches needs caesarean sections, regardless of breed. SKK have a rule that basically means that one caesarean section can be a mishap, two caesarean sections means that she is unsuitable to be a brood b*tch and they basically advice you to spay her, because you won't be able to register any more puppies out of her.
So over here, regardless of breed, most breeders tries their best to only breed b*tches that they think will be able to give birth naturally.

I recently checked with the Swedish club for English Bulldogs, as I understood it, about 50% or less Bulldog litters in Sweden needs to be delivered by caesarean section, BUT that also means that about 50% or more Bulldog litters in Sweden are whelped naturally.

The club wants Swedish breeders of Bulldogs that have a litter delivered by caesarean section to answer a survey about why a caesarean section was needed, this far the most common cause is too weak labour pains, which may perhaps be related to the b*tch's ability to oxygenation during labour.

According to the more detailed statistic provided by the Swedish Boston Terrier club :

The average percentage of Boston Terrier litters born through natural whelping is 46,6%.
Lowest percentage 28,6% and the highest percentage 65%.

The average percentage of Boston Terrier litters born through caesarean section is 42,3%.
Lowest percentage 23,7% and highest percentage 57,1%.

The average percentage of Boston Terrier litters where only the first puppies was born through natural whelping and the remaining puppies was born through caesarean section is 11,4%.
Lowest percentage 0% and highest percentage 18,2%.

The most common cause to caesarean section for Swedish Boston Terriers b*tches are too weak labour pains and/or a too narrow pelvis in combination with too big puppies.

Both these two Swedish breed club's goal includes trying to decrease the number of caesarean sections, the club for Boston Terriers actually have an outspoken goal that within 10 years have decreased the percentage of caesarean sections to 15%.

Both clubs encourage breeders to try and select so that they only breed b*tches that they think will be able to whelp naturally.

What this means I don't know, but to me it seems we shouldn't tar the breeders of English Bulldogs and Boston Terriers in Sweden, with the same brush as the breeders that the Bateson enquiry is based on.

By the way, I can't resist to mention that the Swedish Kennel Klubb also currently have a list of over 130 breeds where breeders can NOT register litters with purebred puppies, unless both parents have official and accepted Hip Dysplasia results BEFORE MATING.

I'm not saying that SKK is perfect, but after reading about how some other kennel clubs works on internet the last years, I only become more and more grateful for that the SKK works the way it does.

Boston Bulldog Breeders Q&A

How much should I sell puppies to Frenchton?

I have a girl in Boston Terrier and I'll raise a French bulldog male. It is in excellent condition and has a great coat and all that. I am not a breeder professional, but if the cubs are in good shape, how much should I sell? As $ 500 to 600? Is that too much? Thanks! 10 points for best answer! PS-If you are against breeding please just not comment. This is something we've been planning to do.

The fact that it was "planning" for do not make it right or ethical. And saying: "No comment," people who disagree with you is very childish. Hopefully that will not make a horrible decision you regret later when you are more responsible and mature ...
