What would be the best first dog: English Mastiff, Bull Mastiff, Rottweiler, Boxer?
I definatly like these dogs, and once I settle down with my own house and gf, I'd like to either take a rescue dog in, or get a puppy.
For a first dog, I would recommend a boxer. They do need a lot of exercise, but are easy to train, and love to please. You can usually find some in rescues, too.

What kind of dog I aim to rescue?
I have a boxer and two cats, but I'm looking to rescue another dog, and looking for a rough idea of what kind of dog I want. I like companion Race / dog agility, and the type of dog you can take about horse shows (very busy!). Has to be relatively friendly with other dogs and cats (I know that every dog is different, but in general). I usually tend to shy away from common breeds like the Golden Retriever and laboratories - are so common and boring!
I would recommend an Australian Shepherd. They are wonderful in agility and would like to be a partner in implementation. Mine also do well around the horses.
