Boxer Rescues Q&A
My 2 boxer 9 week old Boxer rescues have Parvo. We are on day 3 of treatment. When will they eat?
They have been with us exactly a week. We had an appointment for vaccines but they got sick 24 hours before. They are under a vets care, and are not separated, as they are both sick. We are doing under the skin IV therapy both at the vets and at home. I just wonder when I'll know they when i'll know if they will survive.
I have definitely seen an improvement in both boys, they are telling me they want to go out and are starting to drink and keep it down for over an hour, but will not take food, just sniffing it. I,m not sure what is in the IV the vet gave me. But nothing otc.
Thank you Arniea, when they were first diagnosed I was asked by everyone why I did not put my boys down. Thanks for the great advice and should they survive I will follow it. And to everyone offering support and advice thanks as well.
Dear 2 Boxer Mom, Bless you for rescuing the two noble Boxers and another for taking the time to inquire about post parvo care. This nasty little virus has to run its course with main concern on rehydration.Because of fluid and mineral imbalance, due to loss,it's importent to watch and keep track of any elimination and report to your Vet.Because of the irratating effect on stom. whole food should be avoided.A good starter would be LOW sodium chicken broth. You can dilute with a little purified water. They will eat when ready. Ask Vet about a chewable puppy vitamin.Once pups are ready, I would use Iams smart puppy for the first 2 years. Maybe mashed with a little water for the first week. Canned food is not needed as this product is a balanced product but I would still augment with a chewable vitamin.I've had generations of my own Boxers on this line as have family, friends and "customers".Don't fall for the so called "experts" who would have you pay more $$$ for their product. While good, the extra $$$$ spent can't be justified. And Boxer mom, watch out for the naysayers who will have you believe corn is killing our beloved pets. The Boxer was first bred over 100 years ago in Germany. The average diet consisted of mashed cooked grains, mostly CORN,with a little renderd kill or meat scraps(if avail.)I think the breed turned out OK.Well Boxer Mom, I hope this was usefull.Goodluck and give your boys a hug and pat for me.
