Brittany Spaniel Dog Breeder Q&A

Are dogs normally born with stub tails?

There are certain dogs such as, australian shepards, bull dogs, rottwiellers, brittany spaniels, and many more that always have short stubby tails and i was wondering if they are naturaly born with that or if the breeder gets them cut the first day of birth, i have heard they are born with it but i have also heard that they get them cut the first day so they dont remember it?
Thank you for your help!
Thank you for all of your replies so far, and i just want to let you guys know i found out more and cutting the tail is not cruel. It is for saftey purposes in herding and gaurd dogs because there tail may be bit or stomped on by cattle and they could bleed. as for ears, i know some people clip pit bull ears for show dogs because the standard pitbull has straight up ears, not floppy. some people do it for cruel purposes, for fighting they dont want there dogs ears in the way, which is wrong.

The only dogs that I'm aware of that's born that way is the stumpy tail cattle dog. Well I was wrong apparently there's 17 breeds with naturally docked tails according to wikipedia.

It's actually not cruel when done properly and in working dogs has a very practical purpose.

Spend some time working with upland dogs and seeing the dogs come in with bloody tails every hunt to the point where they can't hunt anymore, which they really, really dislike or see a cow dog get it's tail stomped on or caught in a gate and tell me it's cruel to properly remove the tail using a nerve block at an age where the nerves in the tail aren't even developed. Ears are another story but tails are very practical in working dogs.

If you want to sit there and say tail docking is cruel, explain just how much time you've spent with working cattle dogs or bird dogs with long tails.

Yup, god gave em tails so they could get painfully lost later in life instead of a minor procedure when their nerves aren't even developed to feel it and blocks are still used.

Brittany Spaniel Dog Breeder Q&A

Opinions on Brittanys?

I'm very seriously considering a Brittany (sometimes called a Brittany spaniel) and Companion show (conformation classes AKC), and I wonder if anyone here has had or currently have one, and would like to share their personal experiences on race. Make it good, bad or ugly, I would rightful owner to get some opinions. And please, if you're just going to say something about how I need to adopt a dog from a shelter or whatever, do not waste your time. I'm not a stupid person is going to be a "backyard breeder" with a million puppies in my hands, and I do not want to hear your views on how Purebred dogs are the reason for all unwanted puppies today. Thanks.

Brittanys are great dogs but need lots of exercise and training. I was trained a Brittany purebred and taken from his bed at 7 weeks. Honestly, I had a major problem puppy biting, but that was only because he needed more time to socialize with their brothers and sisters. I started training at least 12 weeks old and was a fast learner was amazing! They really are great dogs .... only need serious attention. Good luck!
