Road trip from California to Canada to Florida advice.?
So my friend and I are planning our senior road trip now. We have a few more years, but we want to be prepared. We're planning on starting in Southern, California near LA. From there we're going to Vegas for a few days. Then we're going to drive back to LA and drive north up through all the states to Canada. From Canada we want to go straight through BC to Quebec. With sightseeing and all of course in between. Then we want to drive down to New York and go through those states straight down to Florida. We're planning on going to UCF together.
But like, how many miles would this approximately be? I tried to look it up on like those map websites but it won't let me go from California to Canada. We have approximate guesses on hotel and food costs. We're just unsure about the gas cost, which is going to cost the most. We'd also like some suggestions on nice sites to visit on the way. So any answers or advice will help. (=
Plan on around 15,000 miles or so.
- 2000 up the west coast
- 4000 across Canada
- 2000 down the east coast
- 3000 across the southern USA
- Toss in a few extra thousand for side trips and taking the backroads
This is a pretty conservative estimate. Better to have some gas money left over than run out in Texas!
Here are my recommendations of places to visit...
- Yosemite Nat'l Park, CA
- Drive as much of the CA, OR, WA coast as possible
- Crater Lake Nat'l Park, OR
- Cascades Nat'l Park, WA
- Vancouver, BC coastline
- Pacific Rim Nat'l Park, British Columbia, CA
- Banff, Jasper, Yoho, Kootenay Nat'l Parks, Alberta/British Columbia Canada (on the border between the two and essentially all one park)
- The Great Lakes (Canada and UDA)
- Niagara Falls
- Burlington, Vermont and Lake Champlain
- White Mountains, Franconia Notch and Mount Washington in New Hampshire (I'm from there, so I had to throw this in!)
- Acadia Nat'l Park, Maine
- Cape Cod and the Islands (Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket), Massachusetts
- New York City
- Shenandoah Nat'l Park, Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia into North Carolina
- Charleston, South Carolina
- Key West, Florida
- New Orleans, Lousiana
- Carlsbad Caverns Nat'l Park, New Mexico
- Grand Canyon Nat'l Park, Arizona
- "The Wave", Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Nat'l Monument, Arizona/Utah
- Arches Nat'l Park, Utah (and the other Nat'l Parks in Southern Utah, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Zion, Capitol Reef are all right next to each other)
- Death Valley Nat'l Park, California
That should bring you in a huge loop from LA back to LA. If you hit 1/2 the spots I mentioned, I would consider yourselves successful. Enjoy and take tons of pictures!

A highway in San Francisco, CA to Gold Beach Oregon?
My boyfriend and I will take a road trip from San Francisco CA to Gold Beach Oregon. When Map Quested the instructions I have given the route 101 which is not very ocean stage until the end of the trip. My question is, does anyone know how far / long it would take a highway along the California coast from San Francisco to Oregon instead of 101? It's a highway a very narrow winding roads?
Hwy-1 is not so twisty in this direction, as it is in the area of Big Sur. Is a momentum, but the use of an appropriate vehicle. No SUV or truck. Hwy-1 is two lanes in all the way to Legette, CA, and then merges with Highway-101 in Oregon. Is added a couple of hours on their journey.
