Canada Maps Compare Q&A
How can the times of abandonment of meandering channels be determined?
This is a question on a geomorphology assignment of mine. I said that you need to determine the velocity of the river, the volume of water it transports and the storm cycles. And that comparing old to new maps would be useful to see if there have been any changes.
This particular river is the Sebaskachu River in Labrador, Canada. It doesn't appear to have any chutes and it's fairly vegetation covered so it's a stable river. It's also highly sinuous. It is a meandering river, obviously.
as a thought:
you may have to relate the storm cycles to the river surging, and figure out how much momentum a certain area of water needs before it breaks into a new channel. The momentum probably involves velocity x mass of water.
Since the storm cycles probably range from weaker to stronger, it may be that during a strong storm the break in meandering would occur. So whenever that's going to happen, I have no idea.
Also, the old maps may contain the old meanders and if you can date the maps, it's possible that there is a recurring pattern of time.
hope that helped!
I also hope that I didn't just tell you everything you already knew.
