Would this be logical for a breeder to do?
When they started breeding about 20 years ago, all of their dogs were AKC,
then maybe 7 or 8 years ago, more and more people came to them looking
for CKC registered dogs, so they changed and started registering with CKC.
Now, it's obviously not as good of a registry as AKC is, but if that's what
people were wanting to get, doesn't it make sense?
Here, it's hard to find an AKC breeder locally because for some reason,
people decided they want CKC dogs instead.
Continental not Canadian.
Please answer the question without going off on why CKC is a scam.
I'm just curious if this was a reasonable step to take.
This is not where I got my new puppy. We came across these people
along the way, and the explanation they gave about changing registries
has been bugging me for weeks. Any thoughts?
I'm not an expert in this area because my concern when looking for a pup is for a pet not for show. The way I saw it was that AKC has more strict breed standards than CKC does. CKC has more general breed standards. Compare the breed standards of the same breed on each of their websites and you can see the difference. My guess is that more breeders are going CKC because it's easier and probably a cheaper investment when they purchase their dogs to breed. Many breeders don't get into competitions so they don't have "champions". Just pets. Aren't the majority of puppy sales for pets, not show anyway? If I was looking to enter my dog into competitions then I'm going to look for a pup with champion bloodline. I'm going to pay more for that too. I'm not into that though, so I'm fine with CKC. My Aussie is a documented Aussie, but not from a champion bloodline.
