Canadian Small Dogs Breeders Q&A

What would it take for you to "Recognize" a new breed of dog?

If someone developed a new breed, when would you recognize it as legitimate?

There was some debate about the legitimacy of the Silken Windhound and the Miniature Australian Shepherd. The Alaskan Klee Kai was named as a fake breed but it's recognized by UKC. The Mi-Ki is a mix of several small breeds but is recognized by ARBA.

The Cesky Terrier and Black Russian Terrier are both fairly new breeds, created from other breeds, but that are widely accepted.

Would a dog need to have a working heritage with a real purpose for creating it for you to accept it?

Would the breeders need to make a serious commitment to type and quality?

Would it need to be recognized by AKC, KC, CKC (Canadian) or FCI? What about UKC, ARBA, or an FCI-member country?

Thanks!

Just your thoughts on the question.... you don't have to answer all

For me, it would take AKC recognition or UKC recognition.

For the record, if anyone is interested in how a breed becomes recognized by the AKC, and WHY the "designer breeds" will never be accepted for recognition, read the FSS (Foundation Stock Service) section on the AKC site.

In regards to the "designer breeds".....quoting in part:
How Breeds Enter the FSS®

The AKC only considers adding new breeds to the FSS® or its registry upon request. The breed must be recognized by an acceptable foreign or domestic registry.

The FSS® is not open to "rare" breeds that are a variation of an AKC-registrable breed or the result of a combination of two AKC-recognized breeds. This includes and is not limited to differences such as size (over and under), coat type, coat colors, and coat colors and/or types that are disqualifications from Conformation Events by AKC breed standards.

Under these regulations, therefore, the mixing of a Pug and Beagle , or Lab and Poodle, will never be recognized.
Thank goodness.
