What would happen to the pet population if everybody spayed or neutered their dog/cat?
Do you think that it could ever happen?
With all the pro-adoption out there, I think it is sort of hitting breeders especially hard. My mom talked to a Chihuahua breeder and noone is buying her dogs cause the show Oprah did.
I was just wondering.
With all the mandatory spay/neuter laws, mixed breed dogs would die out first since only breeders would be allowed to get a permit. Not everyone would get their pets fixed at first, but they will eventually all be caught. Poorer people that cannot afford purebred dogs will never be able to have a dog again. Also, it would be extremely difficult for new breeders to get a license, so all dogs would die out after the current breeders retire.
Most people do not get their pets fixed because they either cannot afford to, or they have no transportation. Instead of mandatory spay/neuter laws, states should be working to create more free or low cost spay/neuter clinics. They also need transportation services that pick up owners and their pets to get there, not just to get the pet fixed but to go for other routine vet exams as well. For instance, New York has a van that picks up pets and takes them to their visits and then drops them off back at home when they are done.
