Why won't my rescue chihuahua bark?
I found an abandoned chihuahua on the side of the road in San Diego (you wouldn't BELIEVE the abandoned dog rate here, especially chihuahuas) and took him home, bathed and fed him and we're going to take him to the vet soon for his checkup. We found him a little over a month ago, and he has not let out one bark. Not that I mind of course, but he makes these strange little feeble noises, like he wants to bark but all that comes out is a sort of burp-like purr when he's agitated. He's a very healthy and happy little guy, but I'm wondering why a normal chihuahua won't bark...I've heard of some people puncturing the voice boxes of yippy dogs, but I just don't want to believe someone would do that to him. Any ideas, fellow chi keepers?
I actually believe the voice box thing is a possibility, sad to say. The other thing is I got an older yorkie puppy (8 months) from a home where he'd been hit and when I first got him, it was well over a week before I heard him bark. The trauma of whatever happened to him caused this somehow. However, I didn't notice that burping thing, nor was he trying to bark (which, trust me, he's not shy about now). So I honestly think someone did that to him and then dumped him, although I'd guess there's a slim possibility that he trained himself not to make any noise, but that seems farfetched.
