Would a chinchilla make a good pet?

I am 12 years old and my friend is giving away her pet chinchilla because her brother has an allergic reaction. I would like her to belong to me. But my mom isn't so sure. I have experience with 2 dwarf hamsters. I take good care of them but I do strugle sometimes. They get everything they need just accaionsly there are a few problems. Would a chinchilla be more work? Do they bite? If so, does it hurt?
Any suggestions to convince my mom?

Excuse me ? they are NOT Hypo allergenic, if you can't read dear her brother is ALLERGIC, they are VIRTUALLY hypo-allergenic but there are cases. And they do shed, young and poorly bred chinnies will shed.
They should have treats, a small bit of strawberry once a week makes for a yummy treat, they are shy flighty creatures, and most do not like being held for long periods of time. Mine love cheerio's, shreddies, and alfalfa treats. They require a good staple pellet diet and can have a few raisins a week to aid with training. You will need a chinny-proofed room for her/him to hop around as they need out of cage time. Even one chinchilla needs a large enough cage, they are hoppers and require a good tall cage. To tame you'd need to try and handle daily without stressing the chinny out too much. They live 15+ years so you will have to be in it for the long haul, it's not fun to be bounced around from home to home, they're not like hamsters ! I would NEVER use pine shavings as the dust can cause respiratory problems, carefresh ultra is the best. They do require a dust bath and should never be exposed to open water as their fur does not dry easily and it can make them sick. They are chewers so they will need wood. They are generally nocturnal and are most active early morning and evenings, though some like to poke around during the day. They need a quiet environment as they have sensitive ears.

They do bite, anything with a mouth can bite, and yes it does hurt, especially when they don't know you. They are not cuddly sweet pets. After initial cage and bedding setup they cost about $50 a month for upkeep, including hay, pellets and carefresh. Water needs to be changed daily as with any and every animal and should only need cleaned once every week.

Sleep on it, do plenty of research, they're not a pet for everyone !
