how to choose a dog breed?
okay i live in a house with a large yard surround by parks, the youngest child Living in the house is seven, and we were thinking of a breed not to big but nothing really small either. we all work during the day and go to school. so the dog would be home alone all day is that okay?
Dogs are pack animals so being alone for long periods of time can make them less social (and unhappy). How long will everyone be gone every day (hours)? Is there any way the adults that work can come home during their lunch break to check in on the dog? If not, the dog should be in daycare or have a walker that can visit while you are gone. If you have a neighbor that has a dog (or just loves dogs in general) maybe he/she can dog-sit (though I never advocate relying on this as you never know what may come up in another person's life that could prevent this from happening).
If you're set on having a dog, find a rescue with a foster care program. Foster dogs live in home with volunteers that train them and do extensive temperament testing. The dog will have already lived in a home setting so you'll know if he has any personality or health issues. A puppy would be way too nippy, hyper, and destructive for the household. A calm adult would be a better fit. If possible, adopt two dogs (fosters usually live with another dog that may be up for adoption as well) so they can keep each other company while you are away. A lonely dog is an unhappy one. I hope you have a fenced yard and a door that can be equipped with a doggy door so the dogs can let themselves outside while the family is gone.
Insofar as breeds, I always advocate for mutts. Why not get the best of both (or many) worlds with a mix?

Sheds little. 4). Better for allergy sufferers. 5). We live in a small apartment, but could take the dog for a walk every day. Input will be greatly appreciated ... Thanks.
I really recommend a chihuahua its very cute and everyone commenting on how pretty are.plus are really smart and small and not too big or small, old and perfect for 1 1 / 2 years after the perfect dog ..
