Culture In Canada Q&A
What is Canada's culture these days? Our immigration is over powering our birth rate?
As a Canadian, I'm wondering where our culture will be in the future. Our fertility rate is about 1.5 children per woman, and it is predicted we will be 100% dependant on immigration by 2030 because our natural increase rate will be negative. Immigration is not the bad thing, but how are we going to keep our culture alive with less Canadians in Canada? Is everyone becoming D.I.N.K.S?
NOTE: I knew people would suggest I'm racist or something but I even said "Immigration is not the problem". I'm just saying that our natural increase rate is steadily decreasing. Do we want to have a country reliant on immigration? Immigration isn't bad, but what if people immigrated less in 2030 when were going to rely on them to keep a steady population? Then we would have quite an economic problem with alot of elderly people with no one to pay their pensions. I hope people understand me for what I'm trying to say.
Our culture has always been a multi-cultural one. We have embraced diversity more than our (older) cousins to the south. I see nothing wrong with our 'culture', and certainly don't feel threatened by the fact that nowadays most immigrants do not originate in the British Isles, as they traditionally have. Are you referring to the colour of their skin, or what? It's not white enough to suit your taste? Our cities reflect our cultural mosaic: take Edmonton, for example. How many perogies and keilbasa do Edmontonians eat annually, do ya think? What about Dim-Sum delicacies in Vancouver? Bagels in Montreal? Diversity and tolerance is what our country is all about!
