Doberman Dog History Q&A
would a Doberman make a good hunting dog?
My uncle has a Doberman named Zeus, he's about 2 or 3 yrs old. My uncle wants to train him to be a hunting dog since he hunts deer and rabbit, would a Doberman make a good hunting dog?
I'm a bit doubtful personally since they've been known to have a history of aggression
When they bred different dogs to create the Doberman they used a dog called the Weimaraner because of its hunting traits. Dobermans have been used for hunting. They have been trained to retrieve birds like pheasant and water fowl. And they have been used for coursing such animals as coyotes and foxes.
Here is the history of the Doberman;
http://www.halodoberman.com/historyofthebreed.html
So yes you could train one to hunt its bred into them. I used to have a Doberman that I took rabbit hunting. It worked fine if I didn’t have other dogs along and he would retrieve the rabbit for me.
As for their aggressiveness it depends on how you raise them and the personality of the dog. Mine would kill any cat it saw but would never hurt a child or a family member.
Bring on those thumbs down!
Fact is Dobermans have hunting dog blood in them including Sheppard and terriers. They were bred to be guard dogs not hunting dogs. But the fact remains they have been used to hunt animals and humans.
Here is another link that mentions they were used for hunting.

However many links I give it wont matter to thick headed people who judge all Dobermans from their experience with the ones they knew.
Some people are so set in what they think a wood 2x4 across their head wouldn’t change their mind.
And just look at all the links that mention Dobermans used for hunting;

Are all of these people wrong? Are all of those breeders wrong? Come now!
This link covers a way these people train them that goo http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:EjAts5MIF4kJ:www.johnsoaresk9training.com/info/dobermanarticle.html+hunting+with+dobermans&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us
More on Dobermans;
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/dogs-faq/breeds/dobermans/
No they cant replace a good retriever or a good blood hound. But they are excellent trackers have a keen sense of smell can run down a coyote or rabbit and have been used to hunt with.
I wouldn’t say they are the best breed for hunting. It took me a year to teach my dobie not to rip the rabbit apart when he retrieved it, but he learned to bring it to be as I wanted. Their speed works great for coyotes. I know a guy who had whippets and greyhounds for coursing coyotes. He also had 2 Dobermans. I asked him what they did. He explained when the other dogs had the coyote on the run, he would drive his truck to head them off and just as the dogs were getting near he turned the dobies loose on the yote. Not one coyote survived this means of attack. The dobies killed the coyote very quickly.
So to the people who think this cant be done you are wrong it HAS been done. Oh and about dobies not being able to swim far. LOL My dobie was just 2 when it decided to join us on the lake in our boat. We were about a mile from our camp and also the only boat on the lake. My daughter turned him loose to play and that dog jumped in the water and swam all the way to our boat! That same dog swam across class 5 rapids a few times and would jump off 80 foot banks into rivers, lake and even the ocean for fun and then swim back to us. It loved water. It was from a good blood line and I had the papers on him. But we didn’t cut his tail or ears, we just preferred him looking that way.
A drunk driver crashed into our yard and kill that dog. It was a great loss to the family.
So go ahead folks deny dobies can hunt. Because I know for a fact they can!
Here is one breeder who trains them to hunt and retrieve;
Quote; “We are based in Belfast, Northern Ireland and have owned Dobermans for 26 years. We have been lucky enough to own great dogs which are smart and keen to learn. Most of them we trained as gun dogs to hunt and retrieve.”
