Dog Breed Finder Q&A
im getting a dog, is there other options besides adopting that wont support puppy mills, over breeding etc.?
i don't want to hurt any animals but i am not interested in any dogs on petfinder currently.
are breeders ok?
p.s if u know any sites like pet finder please tell me. thnks.
Breeders are ok.. as long as you take the time to research and find a reputable breeder..
find a breeder who strives to improove and preserve the breed and produce healthy, sound animals.
SO you will want a breeder who either shows and earns CH titles to her dogs to proove they fit the breed standard, or you will want to find a breeder who has working dogs, earns working titles and prooves they can perform the job the breed was bred to do.
The breeder should also be doing proper health testing to assure her dogs are free of genetic disease. Learn what diseases your breed of choice is prone to, so you know what the breeder should be testing for. OFA is for orthopedic problems.. they do also have a database for health issues like thyroid problems, heart issues, bleeding disorders, etc.. CERF is for eye problems, BAER is a hearing test to rule out deafness, PennHip is a more detailed hip displasia test, Optigen is a more scientific test for some forms of PRA.
The breeder should be familiar with the breed standard, health issues, her pedigrees, etc.
