dog breed-borzoi information?
I've been researching information about borzoi's, like how they chase and bloat, and i have some questions for those who know a lot about them pleasee.
1) how much does an average male puppy cost?
2) how can you tell if they bloat
3) would an electric fence work if introduced early?
4) i have a lazy cat, would he chase her if she moved?
5) would ol roy or beniful be ok to feed him?
6) do they get along well with children?
7) how often do they bark?
are they easy to train/potty train?
9) do they often pull on the leash?
10) are they ok with strangers?
i already have a dog, but the reason why i am asking this is because i really want a borzoi, but i feel the research i got isn't getting me anywhere so i want real people opinions (:

if i want a dog that can have an electrice fence, bark little, be big sized, get along with cats and kids, and easy to walk and train,
what breed would you recommend?

Hi There!! Good on you for doing your research!! I have had and bred borzoi for about 16 years and I will respond based on my experience.
In Australia a male puppy will cost between $700 and $1000.
Bloat: there are medical signs that are obvious when your dog is bloating - if you google 'bloat' you will come up with pages of information
Borzoi are generally very soft in temperament. As such I would recommend more secure fencing than simply electric.
Borzoi are sight hounds and as such they have a high prey drive. I have found that they don't bother with things that don't run but in the event it did - well, the consequences can be tragic.
Borzoi will get along well with children if they are raised with children. Mine weren't and although well socialised, they were always wary and felt a bit threatened by children. I don't know that I would recommend a borzoi with little children.
They are not generally big barkers. Mine rarely barked.
I found them easy to house train and were generally very well mannered but they are not a slave to their master.
Mine never pulled on their leashes but that is a matter of training not a breed related issue.
I have found my dogs to be dismissive of strangers. They don't generally enjoy uninvited attention.
With your questions (which are quite valid!) I would probably not want to sell you a puppy. Responding to your last paragraph; I would not recommend electric fencing for any dog, yes they bark very little and they are large. They don't get along with small animals without some training and may never be completely reliable, they are a gentle soft dog dog that is easily offended by rough handling and not very tolerant of small children and finally, they are easy to walk and train if approached with the right attitude and expectations aren't too high. They rarely make suitable obedience competition dogs.
I hope this was of help to you and that I wasn't too harsh. But with a household of cats and children I would suggest a more suitable breed might be a golden retriever or something that isn't quite as sensitive as the sighthounds tend to be. I wish you luck with your venture and hope that I have answered some of your questions adequately.
