Dog Breed Selector Q&A
Can you really trust the Breed Selector Tests on websites? Looking to rescue a puppy/dog?
My Mom told me,as a graduation present, she's going to let me have any puppy/dog I want and she'll take care of all the needs for the first year(vet bills mainly). I plan on moving and going to college so I'm doing a bunch of research on different breeds that could handle the weather (Atlanta,GA) and me not being home due to working full time & school. It doesn't have to protect/defend but I'd like it to at least bark warnings. I'm also looking for one that can handle 'strangers'(aka my friends) coming over. Some do have kids. I'll probably be in an apartment too. I say all of this hoping somebody can suggest a breed/some breeds that would be good for me?
I'm also very active and I love Dalmatians/Dalmatian mixes, would this be a good companion for me in my situation?
Well,I've been on pedigree.com along with purina.com and some others and have taken the breed selector tests. They came up with most of the same results but I was wondering how accurate they are/could possibly be?
I wouldn't recommend a dalmatian (or other larger, active dog breed) in an apartment situation where you wouldn't always be home. Dalmatians are extremely active (that's how they ended up as firehouse dogs, they could keep up with the trucks), and being left alone for long periods of time can make them destructive. Dalmatians can also have some problems with kids (this is speaking generally; obviously individual dogs can vary).
If you want a more balanced description of breeds and their temperaments and needs, http://www.akc.org is probably better than two dog-food Web sites, which should only be used for fun.
It sounds like you'd do better with a small or medium breed that can handle heat decently. The toy group on the AKC site should be a good place to start. I'd back off on the terrier group; they tend to be extremely high energy and if left alone too long without being crated can be VERY destructive.
