We have friends that lost their dog recently, and for better or worse, want that is very similar.
By all means, if you think this is a bad idea, feel free to tell me why- though I won't have the heart to attack them, I might gently help them re-evaluate their potential choice.
Anyway, my partner has has dogs his whole life, was a breeder, doesn't understand this odd search, and can't help us. He says, if you want a good pet, go a the pound locally, pick a pet that passes The Dumb Test, and raise any pet with any breeding or markings with love and care.
So, if you know how to get a specific pet, or have any other commets, please let me know!

Rural area shelters generally have plenty of dogs, puppies included, that are looking for homes. It's unlikely that your friends will be able to find a dog exactly like the one they lost in either appearence or temperment. But large black dogs are often the last to be adopted because people often think they're agressive. (I'm not sure if this is applicable to puppies or just adult dogs.)
I'd advise your friends to keep in mind that no dog can ever "replace" the dog they lost. Even if they found one with the same or similar heritage, that dog would be a different individual from their previous dog. They need to accept that there will be differences, though not all of them may be negative. The purpose of getting a new dog is not to make it like the old one is still there, but to start a new relationship with a unique individual.

i really want a German Shepherd for my daughter who lives in Albany, NY needs to find a good breeder to buy a smart dog srry bout spelling my money is burning
My first question is, does your daughter wants a German Shepherd? Do you have the knowledge and time to raise and train a German Shepherd? They are extremely smart and intelligent and need experienced owners. They also require a lot of exercise, both physical and mental. I would like to make sure it is prepared for a German shepherd before starting your search for a good breeder. Then ask yourself what the dog is used. Will you be a partner? Want Dog sports? Schutzhund? Agility? There are several different lines of German Shepherds - working and show - and depending on what the puppy will be used for, you need to focus their search in that direction. If you want to do Schutzhund, for example, you'd have a working line dog instead of a dog line show.
