Dog Breeders Breed Prices Q&A
selecting a good dog breeder? Never done this before?
I have never bought a dog through breeder before but i have finally decided what breed of dog i want and i want it to be PERFECT and BEAUTIFUL!
But how do you go about finding dog breeders? How do you know if they know what they are doing or not? What kind of questions do you ask a dog breeder? How do i know they arent going to rip me off completely? How do you know what a good price range is? How do you bargin with dog breeders? What is important to know?
I don't want to spend money on a dog and have it grow up with problems and not look like the breed is supposed to look like (i've heard of that happening)
My husband and i and also my brother and his wife live near each other. We have both been looking online for a long time for the perfect dog and have done research and we have decided for our life styles and what we want in a dog, we want Rhodesian Ridgebacks males. We dont want them for breeding.....we want them as companions.
HELP!
I would start with the Rhodesian Ridgeback club. They keep a list of breeders who are club members, which is a good first sign that they are educated, ethical breeders (although you should always investigate further). The breeder list is here- http://www.rrcus.org/breeders/index.htm
Also check out regional Ridgeback clubs- these are associated with the parent club, but may also have additional members who are not on the national club's list. You can find regional clubs here- http://www.rrcus.org/club/regionalclubs/index.htm
Finally, I would check out local dog shows and especially an local specialty shows. For local all breed and specialty shows search here-http://www.akc.org/events/search/index.cfm?action=refresh_index&active_tab_row=2&active_tab_col=2&fixed_tab=7
Make a point to attend and watch the Ridgebacks compete. Be sure to buy a catalog. Make a note of the Ridgebacks you like (by armband number) and the contact info for their owners/breeders will be in the catalog. You can do some talking with breeders at the show, but wait until AFTER the Ridgebacks have shown, and understand that some dogs may be shown by handlers and some owners may need to prepare to head home immediately or may own another breed that needs their attention immediately after. Just introduce yourself, say you like their dog and ask if they have time to talk for a bit. If they do, great, if they don't make a point to contact them later.
To clarify, show breeders produce mostly companion puppies. its a misnomer that all pups from show dogs are showing or breeding quality. Most are not and are sold to companion homes like yours where they are neutered and make great pets.
You find out if your breeder is good by asking questions. research your breeds health issues, then ask your breeder if they screen for these (any breeder who claims they don't screen because "their lines don't carry that" is full of it) Also ask for references- both from other breeders and from pet owners. Ask about champions they have bred (a "champion pedigree should involve numerous champs starting with at least the mother or father- some disreputable breeders claim this when the only championship is one greatgrandsire) Ask about strengths and weaknesses in their lines- a good breeder will be honest about both. Run from anyone who claims to have no weaknesses. They should allow you to see the pedigree, and also hardcopies of health certificates (these should be PennHip or OFA- a simple note from their personal vet is NOT good enough) I like to open a dialouge by telling them about my life and asking how they see their breed fitting in. Whether they agree or disagree, the important thing is to listen to what they say- if they start saying things that are complete nonsense, or the opposite of what the majority of information you have gathered says, run. And, if they advise against a Ridgeback, I would take that into consideration. They have generally lived with the breed for years and know its quirks- its better to find out now that it would not be a good fit, than after you have the dog. A good breeder WILL try to talk you out of a pup if they don't think its the right breed for you- a bad breeder will sell to anyone with cash. Finally, a good breeder will interview you right back! They want to be sure that their pups go to the best homes. Anyone that doesn't ask you questions about your lifestyle, home, feeding plan, training ideas etc is likely not a good breeder.
You will get a feel for price range as you research numerous breeders. Be aware that a "bargain" price is often not a good deal. These are often the pups who grow up to have health issues and not look like the breed. Likewise, the most expensive dog is not always the best either (in fact many bad breeders charge astronomical prices compared to show breeders)
You do not bargain with breeders. Never, Just don't. Most reputable breeders make absolutely no money on the puppies- the cost of health testing the parents, feeding a high quality diet to a large litter, getting proper health care for all pups and the parents, transporting the stud, getting championships on the parents etc cost far more than the price of all the pups put together. You get what you pay for here- you should be willing to pay for the quality that comes with a good pedigree and health tested parents (which dramatically reduces health issues in offspring). Also, most reputable breeders will refuse to sell to someone who tries to bargain., they see it as a sign that you are willing to be cheap with your dog- they want the best homes possible.
