How to be a breeder?
How do you become a breeder?
I fell in love with the breed Paps and Cavaliers
(I'm going to choose one when it fianlly comes down)
I want to be a really -- reputable breeder.

I know how to whelp- so not in that .. topic
but like how to become it really.

i'm not making this a hobby.
If you want to be a reputable breeder, you will need to do years of research and showing before you can consider breeding.
You will need a well-bred dog to start with, one that is registered with a legit Kennel Club and comes from a great lineage ie. has relatives who are show champions. They themselves will need to be win their breed championships to prove they are exemplary examples of their breed. They will need to have their health and genetics tested for faults that could be hereditary. Then will need to be at least two years old but under five. When, and only when, your dog has those you can consider breeding.
You will need to be financially secure with a few thousand put away in the bank for medical bills including emergency c-sections (which are very common in little dogs) because whatever anyone tells you, breeding is NOT PROFITABLE. At the very most a good breeder may meet his expenses but in actual fact, they are more likely to lose money.
You will also need a good relationship with our vet - who MUST have an emergency 24 hour call-out service - as you will be spending an awful lot of time with them. You should also get yourself a breeding mentor, an experienced breeder willing to guide you through any problems that may arise.
You will need to do TONS of reading and research on dog pregnancy, whelping and raising a litter of puppies including how to hand-rear and that means more than opening a few books. In possible, you will have shadowed a breeder through their dogs pregnancy so you get some first hand experience. You also need to research the breed's anatomy, assets, flaws and potential health problems in order to assess which puppies are likely to do well in a show ring and which will simply make lovable pets.
You will be aware that your beloved pet may die through the process of whelping and you will also be aware that with every heat she goes into, her likelihood of developing certain cancers increases. You will be prepared to take many a dog off work and spend many a sleepless night looking after a whelping dog and/or a litter of puppies that the mother may reject.
