Dog Breeders In Illinois Q&A

What should I know about Alaskan Malamutes?

My husband and I are wanting a new puppy and we were torn between getting an Alaskan Malamute and an Aussie. My parents have an Aussie so I know quite a bit about them but I have never had any experience with Alaskan Malamutes and nor has my husband.

What types of personality do they have? How much do they usually cost when you buy them from a breeder? How much grooming do they need? How strong is their smell? If there is any other information you think I need to know about I would appreciate it if you tell me =)
Oh and before I forget, does it sound like we have a good place for a Malamute to live?
We live far out in the country on 162 acres of wooded land in Southern Illinois and the dog will stay outside when it is older. We do a lot of outdoor activities all year round so the dog won't be lonely.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. =)

they have very happy personalities. they are silly, but can be protective and stubborn.
they tend to cosk any where from 300 to 500 dollars, less even if adopted from a shelter
they need A TON of grooming. they shed year round but will get a HUGE winter coat, then lose it. invest in lint rollers ;)
their smell is not to strong, but can be terrible if they are dirty. they need to go to the groomers for a cleaning and trim every three months.
it sounds like you have plenty of room to keep a energetic Malamute happy :)

a few things you may want to know.......
*they MUST be exercised, they were bred to run.
*they are barkers and howlers. just get after them as a puppy and teach them it is bad and you should have no problem.
*They DIG and dig and dig. not much you can do about that sadly.... its their nature.

Good luck :)
