Reputable animal shelters from which to adopt in Brooklyn or New York City?
Hello, I'm trying to find some great animal shelters in Brooklyn or other boroughs in NYC. I want to get my boyfriend a dog for his birthday, something he's really been looking forward to. I don't want to buy from any pet stores since their dogs come from puppy mills or what they like to call "private breeders." Preferably, I like recommendations of places people have been to/knew close friends/family who've experienced these places firsthand. I am an avid dog lover, so I want to make sure I pick a dog from a good shelter or organization.
While I applaud your interest in adopting, I do not condone gifting of pets. You are unlikely to find a shelter that will either.
Gifted pets are highly likely to be returned or end up in rescue within a year.
Pets are best picked by the person to whom they will belong, and it should be a well though out and personal decision. All pets are not good matches for all people.
Instead of gifting a dog, please consider gifting a promissory note, maybe along with a bowl, leash, bed, or the like. This way your boyfriend has the opportunity to gracefully bow out if need be, without putting an animal's welfare at stake, or to properly prepare for and find the perfect dog for him if he is ready and able to commit to it for life.
