Do you know of any reputable dog breeders in the Indianapolis area?
My 11 yr old daughter wants a puppy, we just started looking at pet shops. She has even gone on the internet to find out about different breeds and such. We've seen dogs on the internet for adoption and sale, but I am a little hesitant to buy off the internet and have the puppy shipped, I'd rather see the puppy first. We are new at this and really need all the help we can get. : ) We have gone to the library for books on dogs. My daughter is an only child and she really wants a dog and I think it will be good for her. Please share any helpful info you may have . Thanks for your time, Pretty janae's Mom
I would definitely steer away from pet shops.
These dogs are bred & sold solely for profit. The people who breed them & sell them don't give a hoot about the health of the dogs, or the satisfaction of the people who buy them. They are also usually WAY overpriced for the crap you would be getting.
Once you decide upon a breed or two, I would contact the local breeders who SHOW their dogs.
Show breeders would NEVER sell their puppies over the internet without REALLY seriously checking out the buyer. We are interested in the well being of the puppies that we produce, not about making a profit.
If you buy from someone who shows, you will be taking advantage of all the work that person has done over the years. They have had every sort of health testing imaginable, will have all of their shots, etc, and will look like what you imagine a Yorkie, or Poodle, or Collie or whatever the breed is.
Also, the show breeder will be there for the lifetime of your dog to provide any kind of assistance necessary.
The internet can be helpful as you can look up the national breed clubs for the breed you want & you can ask them to recommend some local breeders to you.
You can then discuss each breed with the different people near you who breed & show them.
Of course, if you and your daughter are still undecided about the breed of dog you want, there are always the local shelters & rescue groups where you can find any number of lovely dogs just waiting for a home!
