Dog Breeders Kentucky Q&A

questions about transport of rats?

i have just recently become very interested in rats. i work with them daily and every day i have liked them more, to a point of loving them. but that is beside the point. i have been looking around for breeders and rescuers near lexington, kentucky. the closest ones are in frankfort, cincinnatti, and ashland. i was a little worried how bad it is to transport them that far. from frankfort its about 30 miles, cincinnatti is like 50-70miles, and ashland is around 100 miles. not only that but i think the breeders may not be doing so anymore. would getting a rat from a rescuer place be good anyway? i know with dogs and cats its quite iffy. pet stores as i have read isnt exactly the best idea for a healthy rat unless you want to pay an extreme amount of vet bills(i have no problem with this, i just want it to be as safe as possible)

You can use a box that is as big as possible because you don't want them cramped the whole ride. A rescue shelter is fine, just make sure the rat is not wheezing or has heavy breathing or sneezes quite a bit as they might have an upper respiratory infection. It depends on the pet store. Look for reviews on the store online, and if there is not a lot of customers most of the time, DON'T BUY YOUR RAT THERE! Also, ask the store owner or manager where they get them from. A lot of pet stores buy pets from mills, places that raise pets for money and don't contribute much to their health. Breeders are usually your best bet, but try to get as much background on the breeder as possible. No matter where you choose to buy, look for the following:
1: Sneezing quite a bit
2: Over-weight rats
3:Heavy Breathing
4: Rattling Chest
5: Blood near eyes or nose
If the rat you want to buy has any of these symptoms, DON'T BUY IT NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO! They have some kind of medical problem, and will cost you a fortune in vet bills! Also, check the place where the rats are living. Is there fresh water and food? Are they handled daily? Do the rats seem friendly and come up to your fingers? If the answer is yes, they are healthy rats!
