Golden Retrievers.?
I am strongly considering purchasing a female golden retriever puppy.
I am not sure how to go about finding one. I've emailed a few places but they are asking prices $900 and up. I don't think I can afford that. For my other dogs, i've always bought them at Pet Stores, but refuse to do this because of the puppy mills.
Can anyone recommend some breeders or good shelters to look in Long Island, NY? Prefer below $800 if possible.

I know others have suggested petfinder ... The really great thing about petfinder is that when you search, most rescues list their dogs and any rescue in your area is likely to pop up. Then you can surf through to their website and see all of their adoptables.

Don't forget - the rescue volunteers are also great sources of info! Don't be afraid to call or email with questions - especially if you are absolutely determined to get a puppy. They can help you find the reputable breeders in the area (who often don't advertise - the good ones don't need to!) They can be your "inside track" to a quality pet!
Goldens are some of the most trainable and adaptable dogs ... I would highly recommend adopting an older dog and saving yourself a lot of puppy hassle! You get to avoid the chewing stage and move right into the loving you, being a great dog stage!
