Dog Breeders Magazine Q&A
I think my rabbits has fleas?
i just got them yesterday from a breeder they are months old and are brother and sister they both live in the same cage there whole life and there prevoius owner always let them out of the cage for a play in the backyard, she also had 4 dogs. Im not sure can rabbits get fleas or are they just cleaning themselves??i read in a magazine to give your pets garlic to get rid of the fleas is that for rabbits aswell???
DON'T give the rabbits garlic. This shouldn't be given to cats and dogs either - and it certainly won't get rid of fleas.
Rabbits need defleaing, deworming and vaccinations just like cats and dogs, especially if they've been outside. They need vaccinating against myxomatosis, which is caught from mosquitoes. There's also a type of parasite that attacks the brain and causes head tilts in rabbits - this is quite common, people usually assume their rabbit has had a stroke.
You can get flea and worming treatment for rabbits from vets - Advantage Rabbit and Panacur Rabbit.
Chalice
EDIT: Rabbits certainly do get fleas, that's why a flea treatment was invented for them! It should be quite easy to see the fleas or flea dirts on the rabbits if they have them - just sort through their fur and look for black specks on the skin, particularly underneath them, these are flea dirts. If you have a flea comb it's even easier, just comb the rabbits and look for fleas or flea dirts(poos) on the comb - flea dirts turn red when wetted so you can be sure what they are.

Dog Breeders Magazine Q&A
Can these be a pet?
Well I saw in a magazine about dwarf rabbits. They are the smallest rabbits in the world. Well, they said they were close to extenction, but people bought them and raised there to help people. Well, I know they are wild rabbits, but I wanted a rodent (such as Chinchilla, cute and cuddly) but that has so many needs as temperature. I was looking at a rabbit, but I looked at were too big. I want a rabbit too small (like a dwarf rabbit.) I also want to adopt or rescue one so if anyone knows of any good rescues rabbits (I have already looked Petfinder) please list them. The last thing I want to end up doing is buying a rabbit from a breeder or store Pet. Also, if anyone knows of any other rodents (except hamsters, guinea pigs) that I could play with and cuddle with, please list them. I have a cockatoo, a dog, and 2 hermit crabs, so I need one, playful little rodent. Thanks!
My recommendation if you want a pocket pet is getting a pet rat from a reputable breeder. They are intelligent and clean animals. The Netherlands dwarf rabbit is small but not as small as a pet rat would be. Many people hold rabbits as pets. Some rabbits will even become litter box trained if you take the time with them. The best pet rabbit would be any domestic races. Make sure you do your research and learn about all the exotic animals that you might want to have a pet.
