Can someone help me in my search to acquire a staffordshire bull-terrier?
I live in Miami, FL and am willing to drive as far as across the state to get one. I have searched the internet and cannot find a breeder nearby with this specific breed of dog. What I am looking for is preferably a puppy under 6-months old, with legitimate papers.
I encourage you to check carefully whether staffordshire bull terriers are legal to own in Miami. A starting point is this quote from the official Miami-Dade government web site:
"It is illegal in Miami-Dade County to own any dog which substantially conforms to a pit bull breed dog, unless it was specially registered with Miami-Dade County prior to 1989. Acquisition or keeping of a pit bull dog: $500.00 fine and County Court action to force the removal of the animal from Miami-Dade County."
I haven't seen the text of the law itself, but I know that in many parts of the country, animal control officers consider staffordshire bull terriers to be pit bulls. I've heard horror stories about well-behaved, lovable dogs being seized by animal control officers after being stuck with the "pit bull" label.
There are many, many, MANY dogs labeled "pit bulls" languishing in shelters all over the country, so if you ever leave Miami, I'd encourage you to consider adopting one of them. SureKat's recommendation that you check out http://www.petfinder.com/ is an excellent one.
