Dog Breeders Of Golden Retrievers Q&A
Dogs/puppies (golden retrievers) in pregnancy/birth and so on.....need advice.?
We have a 2 and a half year old golden retriever. He's the light of our lives! He's a good boy (a little crazy still) but had an amazing breeder and his transition home was perfect. Before we got pregnant (I'm only about 6 weeks), we had pondered getting him a "sibling" from the same breeder (it would actually be his niece or nephew- AKC, no imbreeding!). I've just found out that we have the opportunity to get him this sibling as his sister is pregnant. Would two dogs (a puppy with potty training) be too much? My husband and I work full time (until baby comes) but he could let the puppy outside on a lunch breaks. It would have my dog as a companion during the day. Are dogs generally a bit calmer and happier with another dog companion? I've heard some people say it's easier and better to have two dogs. I worry for the baby too that two dogs would knock the baby over, etc. What would you do?
In my experience, dogs are not calmer when there are more than one. More than one encourages playing. But, on the other hand, golden retrievers are very smart. If you have the dogs already when the child is born, and you teach them from day one, they will probably be very protective of the child. I don't see where it will be too difficult to have another dog during this time. Besides, your dog now would probably like to have the company when no one else is at home to give him attention.
