Dog Breeders Ratings Q&A
How to understand PennHIP?
So I'm looking at health records for dogs because I'm searching for a Boykin breeder. Some of the said breeder's dogs have PennHIP done, but not OFA, I have trouble understanding PennHIP, and I wondered if anyone could tell me how to read their ratings.
Thanks
PennHip gives a percentile rating, which is not necessarily compatible with OFA. Roughly, an OFA excellent, good, normal, etc. will correspond to percentile ratings on PennHip (excellent being in the very high percentile, with more goods than excellent, more normals than either). In practice, I think most breeders ind OFA ratings to be more closely related to healthy offspring. I've known some breeders whose dogs rated good or excellent, only to have bad pennhip scores come back. The dogs had healthy offspring and remained HD free, themselves. If the parents are scoring well in either (either high percentile good for Penn or Good+ OFA), you should be OK.
Also, a genetic marker for EIC (exercise induced collapse) has VERY recently been discovered in Boykins. I don't think it's to the stage it is with Labs, where it's common now to genetically test for carriers, but they ARE formulating a genetic EIC test or boykins. If you're buying in the next few years, it would be worthwhile asking about EIC in breeding stock. EIC is a homozygous condition, meaning you need the gene from both parents to cause the condition- a carrier can be safely bred to a clear (which may produce carrier pups, but won't produce affected pups), but a carrier and a carrier SHOULD NEVER be bred.
Good Luck!
