Dog Breeders Registry Q&A
Should health checks for dogs be registered by breeders?
A little complicated. I know about the OFA and CERF registries for hip, elbow, eyes, etc. disorders. However, would a reputable breeder have tests done on a dog, yet not register the results? That is, would they have a vet do the tests and confirm the dog clear for breeding purposes, but not bother to pay to have the results added to the registry?
Also, these registries are American (although dogs from some other countries are registered). Are there equivalent registries for other countries?
Thanks.
I personally feel that posting the results or not is no reflection on the reputaion of the breeder. If they have the results in hand, and are willing to show them to people who have reason to see them (potential puppy buyer or someone considering breeding to her dogs) I can understand about not wanting to have it publicly listed. I am one person who values privacy deeply. Never list any of my results, not even OFA excellents. (Personally, I prefer PennHip anyway) Some test that responsible breeders do aren't registerable anyway. For shelties, thyroid testing is recommended before breeding. Far as I know, no registry for it.
Added: Ah! I see Loki Wolfchild's answer and learned something today. Apparently you can register thyroid results now. Hmmm. It HAS been a LONG time since I had a litter!
