Im looking to adopt an italian greyhound in the new england[RI or CT] area!?
any help would be apppreciated! I have already put in an application to the IGCA and called a breeder, I just feel its right to adopt a dog who needs a home rather than take the easy way in and buy. A young dog would be ideal. I have two young children, well behaved. My parents always had a dog, so i am not new to training and the attentiom they need.
You would need to turn in an application to your local IG rescue rep, not IGCA, go through the interview and home check process, and then begin to meet dogs. Don't be afraid to follow up with the rep.
IG's are not usually suited to homes with young children, so this may be an obstacle. Your rescue rep will be honest with you about this.
Also, IG's are not like other dogs. They are a hypersensitive breed with potty training issues. You cannot correct an IG like you would a Lab or even a Yorkie. They must be leashed at all times when outside, they are quite fragile until 18 months old, and many are escape artists. Most do not tolerate hectic homes that are full of commotion.
Be ready for the rescue rep to really probe you to ensure you are the right family for one. Don't take it personally if you are not. Perhaps contact a Rat Terrier rescue group instead.
