Dog Breeders San Antonio Texas Q&A

How do you know if it's a good honest breeder and not a puppy mill?

I'm looking to get a pure bred AKC registerable Cairn Terrier. I was wondering if anyone new of any good honorable breeders in Texas like the Dallas-Ft. Worth area or Houston or San Antonio like those areas or little towns around there. ABSOLUTELY NO PUPPYMILLS OR BYB. I found this one guy. www.andyscairnterriers.com but I can't tell if he's a good breeder, one that's in it for the love of the dog not the money. If you could check out the link and let me know or reccomend someone that would really be great thanks.

This person is definitely a BYB. On HER (Andrea) "About me" page she says that "Andy's Country Kennel is an active member of the AKC." Individual kennels are not members of the AKC, other dog clubs are. None of her dogs have titles or health clearances, yet she says that her dogs can be "hunters or show dogs." Although Cairns can kill vermin, they're not in the Sporting Group and are not called hunters. This person is out to make a buck with a small, cute breed. Stay away!

Go to the websites that the other 2 posters mentioned - cairnterrier.org and infodog.com. Educate yourself about the breed. Get in touch with the breeders listed on the Cairn Terrier Club of America site http://members.ctca.us/home.php/breeder-referral. These are people who care about the dogs they produce, who's dogs have health clearances and titles and who won't sell a dog to the first person who shows up with the $$. Here is a very good description of what makes a responsible breeder http://www.shihtzu.org/Info/breeder_guidelines.asp?menu=Info#breeder It's from the American Shih Tzu Club's page but the information applies to any breed/breeder. Good luck in your search.

PS Many posters wrote about how the puppies look or whether the premises are clean. Certainly all dogs and puppies should look clean and healthy. But if you rely on those criteria alone you have no guarantee of finding a responsible breeder!

Dog Breeders San Antonio Texas Q&A

Chihuahua breeder ...............?

I'm looking into getting a Chihuahua, I would love to have a teacup chihuahua because I travel between Texas and New York often, and it would be easy to take one on the plane with me. But please dont tell me go to my local shelter (I would love to adopt one of the house) because I have a bird (a cockatiel) and the need to train the dog to get along with him at an early age. Anyone know of any reputable breeders in San Antonio or surrounding area? Thanks for your help =)

I do not know of any breeders in San Antonio or the surrounding area, however, I would recommend you do some research and try to find some dog shows in your area. In general, if you are competing in the show dog of his breed your own dog or someone to work as a driver for someone who races, so you can talk with people and try to find a breeder you like. (Be sure not to talk to them just before getting in the ring that you are bothering them and not focus on you and probably not answer your questions, so "that will focus on the preparation and preparing to enter the ring.) chihuahuas are a common breed and I'm sure there are some breeders in the neck of the woods that breed chihuahuas nice-it's just a matter of finding them. It will also give a change to admire some quality races chi! :) I agree, sometimes there are dogs that come from shelters that leave the shelter of the issues, unfortunately (although most dogs are beautiful!)-Which had to be somewhere kind of bad situation to be in the shelter, first, while it would be a beautiful thing to adopt a dog from a shelter, if that's not what you want, no one forces you to have a dog that does not feel safe with or do not want. YOUR dog is the dog you want from your most likely going to be in your life for the next ten to fifteen years. I recommend against getting a "teacup" chihuahua "this is not a term any reputable breeder will be used. It is a term generally used for refer to the smallest littermates generally referred most reputable breeders as the 'dwarf'. You have to consider that they are the smallest for a reason and usually is not good parenting to the size it is because there is something wrong with them, the body's energy, then, will combating the problem instead of helping them grow and therefore get a very small dog. Airlines take a small chihuahua full-size and the dog will being less than ten pounds in general, without the risk of health problems as an open fontanel, liver shunts, heart problems, etc which are so often with cups of tea. I know several people with Shetland sheepdog (breed much larger) that can take their dogs on airplanes, and those are much larger than any chihuahua I've ever known. I would avoid any website or breeders that "ship" that any reputable dog breeder will not send a dog to you without having to see their breeding facilities (of a house if it is a good breeder! There is a place of business!) and have to meet if not the mother BOTH parents and their other dogs. Dogs must be champions to prove they are quality dogs, not just "OMG is so cute I think he deserves to be a dad!"
